Carlo impresses in Magny-Cours Formula 3 test!

Under changing track conditions Carlo van Dam showed his abilities in a Formula 3 test on the Magny-Cours circuit in France. The Dutchman, who recently finished third in the heavily competitive Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0, made a real good impression on the Signature-Plus team. By also setting the fastest lap on the timing sheets the S-T-A-R-T driver really displayed his potential with the French team! With an eye on 2007 the Formula 3 Euroseries is one of the possible future steps on the autosport career of the 20-year old from Vlaardingen.

In the early hours Van Dam drove his first few miles in the Signature-Plus Formula 3 car, which is driven by a powerful Mercedes engine. He tested with the team from Bourges which ended in third place in the team classification of the Formula 3 Euroseries this year with drivers Guillaume Moreau and Romain Grosjean. Van Dam, who defended the SG Formula colours with success in recent years, was immediately familiar with the French language and therefore started to the test with a lot of confidence. This resulted in fast lap times from the very first lap.

Van Dam did a total of two runs on rain tyres on a wet track in the morning, before changing to slicks. After Van Dam got used to the car and carried through several changes to the set-up he tried to put in a fast lap time just after the lunch. On a track, that had gone dry in the meantime, Van Dam did really well and set a time of 1:35.3 on a set of used tyres. Because dark clouds had gathered over the track again, the team decided to switch to new tyres half way the afternoon already. Van Dam was just getting into the right rhythm when he had to abort his fast run on the 4.251-meter long track.

He had improved his time to a fast 1:35.1, but Yann Clairay (also testing for Signature-Plus) had gone off the track. After the session was restarted Van Dam added a little something and recorded the fastest time of the day (1:35.0)! Not long after this time the test was interrupted again with a red flag. Because the tyres had reached their peak, the Signature-Plus team and Carlo decided to call it a day and ended the test.

CARLO VAN DAM: “It was a really positive day of testing. I would have liked to do some extra miles to fine-tune the car, because Magny-Cours has a lot of challenging turns in which you really have to find the limit in a Formula 3 car. It is a pity that we had to abandon the session after yet another red flag, because if I would have been able to finish the run we could have gone half a second faster. Nevertheless the team and I worked together very well and we found a good balance in the car. I did a total of 65 laps and managed to adapt easily to the changing track conditions. The purpose of this test was to see how the combination Signature-Carlo van Dam works and at this point I am very optimistic about that. This is certainly a serious option for 2007. I hope I get the chance to prove myself in this Formula 3 series (which is held as a support race for DTM and several Formula 1-races), but the help of our sponsors is essential for that. Moreover there have been contacts with Philippe Sinault, team director of Signature-Plus for quite some time and therefore I would really like to thank him and his team for giving me this opportunity!”
