Carlo optimistic for second race weekend

During the first two free practices at the Autopolis circuit, Carlo van Dam showed his potential preparing for the second race weekend of the Japanese Formula 3 championship.

After the morning and afternoon testing sessions on Thursday, he was the fastest man of the day. Carlo: “The weather conditions were dry, but still quite difficult. With only 5 degrees Celsius the Autopolis mountain circuit 800 meters was very slippery. All things considered, this is a very fun track with a lot of very exiting corners, height differences, bumps and dips. This promises a spectacular race.”

The TOM’s Toyota driver is very pleased with his performance so far. “Even from the start we had two good sessions. In the beginning I used a set of fresh tyres to put down fast track times. During the afternoon we changed a couple of things and tried out a different setup. Happily the track changed for the better and got more grip, which I felt all through the car. It changed everything.”

This weekend will be hard and unforgiving for the Bridgestone tyres. “We have to deal with quite a lot of graining. The new tires give a lot of grip during the first two laps, but after that they get a lot slower. That can be difficult sometimes, but challenging at the same time.”

There are two free practice sessions left on Friday. “Every race we have to fight for the win. We fell a bit short in Fuji, but in Motegi we changed a few bits. We look stronger now, but it won’t be easy, that’s for sure.”

“Qualifying will be very important. If you make any mistakes during the first two laps, it’s almost impossible to make up places and time. And we know that overtaking will be very difficult. I am definitely a contender who can win and today went really well. But tomorrow is another story.”
