Carlo van Dam untouchable at Suzuka

12-07-08

Dutch racing driver Carlo van Dam today dominated the eleventh round of the Japanese Formula 3 championship at Suzuka. From pole position he drove his Toyota Team TOM’s Dallara to his fourth win of the year, setting fastest lap by a substantial margin along the way. Also for tomorrow’s race, the leader in the Japanese Formula 3 standings has claimed pole position.

“I think this was my best race in Japan to date”, says Carlo, who already was fastest in testing yesterday (Friday), before claiming pole position for both races at Suzuka in qualifying this morning. “Your fastest two laps in qualifying determine your starting position in the two races. I did a 1.56,418 and a 1.56,404, so that was pretty consistent. In the race I was about half a second a lap faster than the rest of the field and the only one to get into the 1.57’s, so I got an extra point for setting fastest lap as well. We have got everything sorted pretty well at the moment and physically I am getting stronger still. It’s 37 °C here and Suzuka is quite a demanding track of course, but to me, physically a race now really is over in a blink of an eye. Particularly in the last few races we have been very strong and success always is a good motivator, but we keep on working hard, for Honda and Nissan will not sit still either.

“Of course I am satisfied with today’s result. In the championship I now have a lead of 59 points, but naturally we must focus on getting the maximum out of tomorrow’s race.”
