Review: Carlo van Dam ends final F3-weekend with a victory!02-10-07
With a victory Carlo van Dam ended the German Formula 3 championship in a glorious way. At the Oschersleben circuit the new ATS Formula 3 Cup Championship showed once more he was the only one to lay claim to the title. In the first race the Dutchman showed his potential. After some impressive overtaking manoeuvres he ended up on the podium again in third place. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver scored 9 wins, 10 pole positions, 7 fastest race laps and 16 podium finishes this season. Van Dam also dominated the Rookie Cup, scoring 150 points. In the coming months the young driver will not be doing nothing. By taking the title Van Dam earned himself a test in a GP2 race car. He is also looking at his options for the new season.
On a drying track Van Dam went out on slicks on Friday. In the first free practice he tried several different set-ups and clinched the fourth time. In the second session Van Dam was on top after his first run already, until it started raining cats and dogs. He used the remainder of the session to get a good wet weather set-up for the car. On Saturday two qualifying sessions were on the schedule. Van Dam mastered the rain and set the fastest lap time after three laps around the 3.696m long track. The other drivers tried whatever they could to beat Van Dam’s time but were unable to go quicker, which meant he scored his tenth pole position of the season. In the final qualifying session it started to rain even heavier. Due to numerous yellow flag zones he only had a couple of laps to set his time. Van Dam ended the session second quickest, with only Frédéric Vervisch ahead of him.
Van Dam did not have a good start of race one. Due to gearbox problems he dropped to eighth place after the start. In the spray, thrown up by the drivers ahead of him, Van Dam had to do everything he could to match the pace of the others. Van Dam did not give up and fought his way back in the race. After Récardo Bruins Choi retired and passing Matteo Chinosi he passed the chequered flag in third place after eleven laps. In the final race of the season Van Dam did have a good start and was able to get past Vervisch going into the first turn. Van Dam got rid of the Belgian driver quickly and rapidly moved away from the rest of the field. Van Dam was getting in the right rhythm and set the fastest lap of the race in the eighth lap. The champion scored a deserved ninth victory of the season on Sunday afternoon!
Carlo van Dam: “This weekend I once more showed that I was the best. I have dominated the whole Formula 3 season and scored my ninth victory already today. Again I would like to thank Van Amersfoort Racing. They have given me a super car this year and I finished the job. By clinching the Formula 3 championship before the end of the season my sight is fully set on next season already. I am currently talking with a lot of my sponsors and am looking at all options for 2008. In a month from now (November 1) I will get my first taste of the GP2 Series. By winning the title I have been offered a test with BCN Competicion at the Paul Ricard circuit. I am really looking forward to it!”
