Review on the ATS Formula 3 Cup at EuroSpeedway Lausitz

On the Eurospeedway Lausitzring (Germany) Carlo van Dam has done himself a great favour again. After the Dutchman finished just outside the podium by taking a fourth place yesterday, the Van Amersfoort Racing driver dominated in the second race today. Van Dam led the race from start to finish and took his fourth victory of the season in the ATS Formula 3 Cup. In the championship standings Van Dam has maintained his leading position. He has now collected a total of 84 championship points. In the Rookie Cup Van Dam also has a grand lead. After ten races he has scored 80 points.

As a preparation for the qualifying and races there were two ninety minute long free practice sessions scheduled on Friday. Van Dam and his team went out to find an ideal set-up, but they still lacked a few tenths of a second to set a really fast lap. With a lap time of 1:17.3 Van Dam ended the first session in fourth place. In the second free practice session a broken engine mount caused trouble for Van Dam, meaning a fast lap time was out of reach. Before the qualifying session started the set-up of the car was changed. The S-T-A-R-T driver went for a fast lap. With a lap time of 1:16.950 Van Dam was in fourth place. Vietoris, Vervisch and Verdonck were quicker during the session. In the second qualifying session the pieces fell into place for the Dutchman. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver took the important pole position for the final race of the weekend in a 1:16.367. This meant the seventh pole of the season for Van Dam!

In the First race on Saturday afternoon Van Dam got away from the start well. He was able to pass Nico Verdonck immediately, but got stuck in turn one, allowing the Belgian to pass him again. An incident involving Glorioso and Diana brought out the safety car early on. During the seventeen laps of the race the lap times of Van Dam were getting quicker and quicker and he tried to catch Vietoris. The German firmly shut the door however and Van Dam was unable to pass him. After just over 25 minutes Van Dam crossed the line in fourth place. In the warm-up leading up to the second race of the weekend Van Dam tested the final adjustments made to the car. He got away really well at the start and maintained his first position in the first lap. Vietoris and Verdonck were able to keep up with him in the early stages of the race, but had to let go of the Dutchman half way the twenty lap long race. Van Dam was able to increase the gap to his opponents all the time and even lapped the slowest car towards the end of the race. The 21-year old driver crossed the line in first place. Vietoris and Verdonck had to be content with the remaining podium places. With this fourth victory of the season and the retirement of his biggest opponent, Vervisch, Van Dam strengthened his leading position in the championship.

Carlo van Dam: “Despite my victory I am looking back at this weekend with mixed feelings. It was hard to get up to speed and in the first qualifying session I could not play an important role. In the second session everything went well fortunately and I clinched my seventh pole position of the season. Because some of my opponents failed to score I got further ahead of the rest. I am looking forward to the second part of the Formula 3 season with a lot of confidence!”
