Carlo van Dam joins Kolles & Heinz Union in Formula 3 Euro Series11-02-09
Dutch racing driver Carlo van Dam (22) will this year compete in the European Formula 3 championship with Kolles & Heinz Union and Volkswagen. Van Dam won the 2007 German F3 title before dominating last year’s Japanese Formula 3 series. In 2009, the European championship, known as the Euro Series, will comprise 20 races spread over ten events in five European countries and is often part of the support program of the ‘Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters’ (DTM). Carlo will also race in the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort in the Netherlands.
“I look forward to contribute to the success of this new team and working with Volkswagen”, Carlo says. “I had a fantastic season in Japan in 2008 and last autumn I had several offers from teams in Formula Nippon and the Japanese GT championship. Then Japanese motor racing was hit hard by the financial crisis, however, so I very much welcomed the offer from Kolles & Heinz Union and Volkswagen. As a driver, to be asked to help achieve the ambitions of a works supported team is very rewarding and of course it represents a great challenge.”
The new, Luxembourg based team is headed by Werner Heinz, who has been involved in motor racing for many years and who is the manager of F1-driver Nick Heidfeld and Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen among others. His partner Colin Kolles has worked with several F1-teams en runs Audi’s in the DTM and the Le Mans Series. Technically, Mike Krack, formerly with the BMW Sauber F1-team, is in charge at Kolles & Heinz Union.
Heinz is happy to have contracted van Dam “because we have been able to attract such a good and experienced driver for our team. Together we want to prove that we can achieve our targets.”
Also Kris Nissen, Volkswagen’s motor sports director, responds enthusiastically: “Kolles & Heinz Union proves with its drivers choice that they aim to race at the front: with Carlo van Dam they bring an experienced and fast guy to our driver squad.”
The first two rounds of the 2009 Formula 3 Euro Series will take place during the weekend of May 17 at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany.<- Back to: News
