Carlo van Dam returns to Nürburgring 24 Hours

Dutchman Carlo van Dam will again join the works Subaru team for the 39th running of the Nürburgring 24 hour race to be held in June. Like last year, Subaru has entered the SP3T-class for cars powered by turbocharged engines up to 2000cc. The Japanese manufacturer has developed a new car for 2011, the WRX STI tS, which Carlo tested in Japan for the first time at the end of last week on the Fuji circuit near Gotemba.

“Last year I raced at the Nürburgring for STI, Subaru’s works team, and after the race I was asked if I wanted to be part of the team in 2011 as well. I naturally accepted the offer gratefully, because STI is a very professional organisation and it is a fantastic race. Subaru returns to the Ring this year to win and it has worked hard on the new car, which is lighter, has improved aerodynamics and a better, further developed engine. On May 14, to prepare for the 24 hour race [June 25-26], we will compete in another, shorter race at the Nordschleife, the same track on which the 24 hour race is held. All in all it is a serious and ambitious program”, says Carlo, who shares the new WRX STI tS with Japan’s Toshihiro Yoshida and Kouta Sasaki and German Marcel Engels.

Carlo, who this year also races in the Japanese Super GT championship and therefore now lives in Tokio, flew to Hong Kong shortly after the test at Fuji and was thus not in Japan when the country was hit by the earthquake and tsunami. He is of course shocked by the disaster: “What has happened is such a tragedy and my thoughts are with the victims.”
